Backyards

I noticed a hit on BYS the other day for the search term 'how to re-string trimmer'.  I thought about doing a video on this, but am worried the method would only be applicable to the model string trimmer I use.  If anyone has a good generic string trimmer 'how to re-string' instruction set - feel free to comment,  I've owned several string trimmers through the years.  As I recall each one had a little trick to putting new string line on them.

What's your take on re-stringing your string trimmer?

2. For all you pool owners out there that live in the midwest and southern parts of the US - that are right now contemplating their pool closings (if you haven't already)..

You don't have to drain your pool and essentially shut it down - or call the pool guy to do his $250 closing procedure.  If you leave it running, it might just be cheaper to leave it on all winter.  It really depends on the duration of your winters and the severity of them.  By all means turn off the heater if you have one during this time.

It''s also much quicker to open it up in the spring - leaving you weeks ahead of your neighbors who close theirs each year.

If you live in an area that has some risk of power failures coupled with freezing temperatures there is also a way to protect your pool tile and plaster that's easy and free to do.  Save those plastic gallon milk jugs and fill them 1/3 - 1/2 with sand & just toss them into the pool and allow them to float around - ahead of any big freezes.  Should the water on the pool surface freeze the jugs will absorb the expansion of the surface and avoid cracking any tiles.  Use as many as you can - more for larger area pools.

That's all for now.  I welcome your thoughts.

3. Welcome to the Backyard Steward Blog.  I'm still in the experimental stages of this effort and would really welcome any and all ideas you might have for it.   I've no interest in proliferating spam - as I really can't stand it like most people.  I am interested in collecting your input for your backyard projects - as well as your own experiences and suggestions for everyone to benefit from.  Some anticipated topics include such things as:

- Pond troubleshooting
- Pool maintenance/installation
- Landscaping ideas
- Maintenance tips & tricks
- Tools know how

... and probably a section on entertaining in your backyard, games, toys for the kiddos, and so on.

For now I want to invite you to sign up and begin submitting your suggestions.  Don't hesitate to jump in.  If you're new to blogging, just send me your info and I'll get you setup and send you an ID and password you can change once you get logged in.

Have a wonderful day!
